Top places to live in Birmingham

As the UK’s second city, Birmingham is becoming first choice for those looking to move to the Midlands. With more canals than Venice, the youngest population in Europe, and the title of the fastest growing UK region outside of London, there’s never been a better time to be in Brum.

However, with way more than ‘Quarters’, deciding which part to call ‘home’ can be tough. From small, quaint villages through to the hustle and bustle of a thriving city social scene, Birmingham offers diverse living (without the hefty price tag of London). Want to work out which one you should live in? We’ve got your answer…

One of the city’s most historic and distinct neighbourhoods, Digbeth is situated a 10-minute walk from the New Street station and the City Centre. Dominated by Victorian industrial buildings, the Digbeth district has been reimagined with the future in mind. Now, one of Birmingham’s most up-and-coming cultural cornucopias, Digbeth boasts a long list of bars, pubs and eateries, even being crowned the coolest Neighbourhood in Britain by the Sunday Times.

Commonly associated with the British Electronic Music scene, Digbeth is home to the HMV Institute and multiple rave venues. One of the area’s most flocked-to places is The Custard Factory: an independent shopping haven created from the regenerated Bird’s Custard factory, it features cafes, restaurants and shops for appreciation of all things creative.

On the cusp of Birmingham’s city centre sits one of the country’s most dazzling destinations: The Jewellery Quarter. One of the most historic parts of Birmingham the JQ has strong links to its industrial roots but is also known as a much sought after, up and coming residential space. This uniquely urban area is also a popular tourist location for visitors – particularly those looking for something sparkly – and has some stunning spots perfect for Instagram.

All but one of the JQ’s original Georgian buildings were flattened in the mid 1900s, making way for redevelopment of the area meaning the majority of the homes in and around the JQ are newly-built, with more and more on the horizon.

Harborne hosts some of the region’s most luxurious homes, surrounded by masses of groomed greenery and conservation areas. This family-friendly neighbourhood offers a number of boutique stores and a bountiful choice of cafes and restaurants boasting an abundance of cuisines. Harborne is a familiar suburban area, yet is situated only a short journey from the City Centre so makes for an easy commuter town. Harborne’s

leisure facilities are next to none when it comes to quality from swimming pools to golf courses, you’re spoiled for choice with hobbies in Harborne.

The Southside of Birmingham City Centre is made up of three main areas ‘Oriental Chinatown’, ‘Theatreland’ and the cosmopolitan Gay Village. The Chinese influence comes from a prominent concentration of Chinese owned businesses, organisations and social clubs which is reflected in its incredible selection of spots to enjoy all kinds of Asian cuisine. Complimenting the neighbouring areas of Theatreland and the Gay Village, Arcadian is situated in the centre of the Chinese Quarter- as complete circle of clubs and bars brings party people to the centre of this distinct district.

New Street, Grand Central and the Bullring are some of Birmingham’s most famous landmarks. Living in the City Centre is ideal whether you are a keen traveller with easy access to nationwide trains and tram services in and around Birmingham; or simply somebody who enjoys the hustle and bustle of a busy city during the week and at the weekend. The City centre welcomes tourists-a-plenty as well as party people visiting Broad Street-the city’s most dynamic entertainment destination.
